I've never understood the BMW logic.
Handbook advises you to check oil level before every ride. It also instructs the engine should first be run up to full operating temperature, switched off for sufficient time for all the oil to drain fully downwards before checking.
It does seem counterintuitive.
What if there is no oil visible on the dipstick when cold? Do you run the engine to verify the oil level once warmed and risk there being insufficient oil in the system to protect the engine?
I've had dry sump bikes in the past that have had cold indicative levels on the dipstick and a measuring level on the same stick for when the bike was hot.

I couldn't have expressed it better myself, Tomcat. Exactly my thought as well.
Sno, yup. I never cared for it, myself.
