GPS use better less expensive garmin ZUMO XT with bmw mount
« on: October 14, 2020, 07:53:23 PM »
If you have the BMW GPS mount on your ride and want to use the better & less expensive Garmin ZUMO XT with that mount.
Here is how I did it.

1. remove the 4 bolts holding the GPS quick connect.
2. set the quick connect (wired part) out of the way
3. Take the main part with locking mechanism to your workbench & cut it into 3 pieces as shown left of & above mounting holes
Ignore the long cut on the far left (that was plan A that didn't work out)

4. Now you can mount the ZUMO XT quick connect to the 4 hole piece from old mount.   I reversed the black part that mounts to handlebars.

5. Wire the ZUMO XT to your battery
6. wire tie the BMW quick connect & wire out of the way.

That is it..     It is very stable!

The tilt is adjustable - You can see it very well over a tank bag - It doesn't block the digital display

Does it work with the Wonder Wheel and TFT?
I don't know where we are... but I have been lost here before...

No, it doesn't. Which is the main reason BMW sells so many Nav devices :)
IMHO the nav mount on the handlebars is stupid and dangerous. No idea why they don't mount it above the TFT like on the 1250. Probably a smaller screen area or to "differentiate" the models. At least there are a number of options to do this.

I think the only reason why the navi mount is on the handle bars is because the standard F750GS windscreen is too short to cover one mounted above the TFT. I agree it is a stupid and dangerous place to put it.
It seems BMW is moving towards even larger TFT screens which will then have the full navi map function (not just arrows) working from the BMW connect app. So I think the days of a separate navi are likely to be numbered. However, This will be introduced in the RT and GS models first.

I saw this posted on another website...

Has anyone tried this?

Yes, you can fit the Zümo XT on the BMW original Navigator support.
Built a spacer plate 12mm thickness with 4 x 4,5mm holes.
You turn the original support for 180° (key on top right)
replace the original Navigator connector and wiring by the connector and wiring delivered with the Zümo XT (same space between holes)
The 180° rotation allows to access at the on/off button on the back of the XT
Fix it with longer screws (40mm in place of 30) including the new spacer.
You can built a special part (flat angle bracket) that blocks the unlock system of the XT support when engaged.
That part will be fixed on the sliding part of the BMW support to restore the anti-theft function.
Really it works well !

If it's not a BMW nav it won't interact directly with any BMW subsystem, so there's no point in asking if it does.

Is it worth crying over the loss of the wheel? Nope! Why? You shouldn't be interacting with it during the ride anyway.
The road is dangerous enough without added distractions, i've been increasingly aware of this the last 2 years. Since 2019, had two accidents resulting in injury.

There are other methods of mounting it too but good to know about this one. The XT is an excellent Nav. I think SW-Motech has something for this.

Appreciate your thoughts on that - interestingly enough I found this video...

Looks like Motorrad may be moving away from stand-alone GPS - watch for the tidbit at the very end of this video...

I hope you have completely recovered from your mishaps - I work as a paramedic and have transported many fellow enthusiasts   :184:

My body appears to be mending so far.

I like the fact that they are offering it as an option but I don't like the app it uses, the navigation software is not accurate enough to be reliable. Eventually maybe it will be, the problem with relying on it is if the phone doesn't work then neither does your navigation.
Those of us who got the TFT enabled 850's are familiar with how it works.

Anyhoo the kit in the image is far better then beemer's handle bar mount design. When I bought the bike I bought a cheap ADV style touring helmet with this massive chin bar that blocks my view of almost everything below the upper region of the windscreen on the bike. To see the TFT i'd have to take my eyes entirely off the road to look down at the handle bar area or TFT.

The street oriented touring helmet (C3 Pro) i'm using now doesn't do this.

Hey Newguy - glad to hear you are on the mend!

I would expect the elevated mount would be even more appreciated / required when off road / standing on the pegs. Are you satisfied with your current mount? Who is the manufacturer?

Kinda torn between the Zumo XT and the Montana 700i as I do ride in some very remote areas in the interior British Columbia. (The satellite Inreach could be very well come in handy)
