    "MG85 (K82)" or "MG85r (K82)"

So I go to https://sw-motech.us/ to look at skid plates. Using a pull down menu, I select the make (BMW), the model (F 850 GS Adventure), and the year (2022). No problem. But then there is a final pull down menu asking me to select between the following types: "MG85 (K82)" or "MG85r (K82)". I have no idea what to select.

I'm still looking around the web for an answer and thought I would drop the question here to see if anyone knows. I found the following explanation on https://www.reddit.com/r/Motorrad/comments/wkhvzq/mg85_vs_mg85r/:  "I may be wrong on this, but I believe all 2021 + bikes are MG85r, with the earlier ones being MG85." I'm not completely convinced by this explanation because the person seems unsure about their own explanation, and SW-Motech asks for the model year. Why would type matter if model year could do the distinction?

Anyway, can anyone tell me what the difference is between these two types: "MG85 (K82)" or "MG85r (K82)"?

    Thanks,
    motoZingaro

No idea what the difference is, however if you omit the last field on SW-Motech's website then the search will still work.

Looking at skid plates it's the same SW-Motech part number for the MG85 or the MG85R, so in that case it doesn't matter.

Have you asked SW Motech? This is not a BMW designation, as you can see by going to real OEM.com. The US model is (0K01, 0K03) with USA market selected. In all cases the BMW a model is just K82. I’ve also tried looking at a few items and the part numbers are identical. So whilst they could be different (as mentioned, EU4 vs EU5, so crash bars will be different), only SW Motech are likely to know.

Interesting site. It doesn't show anything about the MG85 or MG85r. Still a mystery. Probably nothing.

Thanks for sharing that site. I learned my bike was produced on a Wednesday. A good day to have a vehicle built according to a German friend of mine. The story goes that Monday and Tuesday the mechanics are recovering from a good weekend. Wednesday is peak work. Thursday and Friday they're looking forward to a good weekend. :030: :008:

Some info from my BMW F850GSA  VIN
    Type: 0K03
    Development Code: K82
    Production Date: 2022-07-06 (Wednesday)

The MG85r (K82) and MG85 are "Type Codes" which indicates European model variations. Occasionally these type codes don't correlate with US models and can create confusion. Most parts aren't affected by the model code, so you can leave that section blank (Select Make/Model/Year only) and see if the part number is the same for various model codes. As long as the various types listed for your model bike all use the same part number, the part will be compatible with your bike, regardless of type.
