    Gear Ratio 15t or 16t?

I know I have read some threads on this topic but I could not find one using the search. Sorry if this is a rehash.

We are heading to central Utah in April for 5 days going into the Maze on Dollhouse and Flint Trail and then over to Escalante. We will be in dirt and sand almost the entire trip. I need more low end. Last year we road the White Rim Trail in Moab and I got stuck on a hill. I have an 850GS and had about 60 lbs of gear. I just did not have the pop to get moving. In addition, I am trying to master the "front tire lift" to get over short ledges and logs (<8 inches). I have not had much luck so far with the stock configuration (17/44).

So should I go with the 15t or the 16t? The majority of people I have heard from say "16t" because you loose too much on the top end. If I am not going much over 65mph (105kph) 99% of the time, is this a big concern? While I do use the highway to get to my riding areas, I rarely exceed 65 - I just set the cruise control and relax.

I appreciate any feedback. I am taking the bike in on the 18th of March to get the gearing switched over so the sooner the better.

PS - I know I am not worthy as I am taking the bike to a BMW shop for the swap and not doing it myself. My logic, however, is that I do not want to be 50 miles into Utah canyons and relying on maintenance I did myself for the first time. A tow from out there would cost about as much as a new bike!

I think that I would only go down one tooth to the 16 and take a 15 with me  :084:

A one tooth change in the counter shaft sprocket gives you about 6% increase in rpms at any given speed. I run a 16 so I donít have to slip the clutch when taking off from a stop. Itís just enough to make a difference. I can still cruse at 90mph plus if I need to and easily go into the 3 digit speed. I think if I were doing creepy crawly off road Iíd try the 15 tooth. After your trip learn how to change it yourself. Itís not difficult you just need the proper tools.

I had the 15t installed. As expected lost some top end - at 70mph ran at 4900 rpm. Speedometer indicated 71 mph although I measured it at 69 (Not really surprised as I have owned 4 BMWs and none of the speedometers were accurate). The bike zips through the gears but I still have that little lug off the line. That problem is related to something else.

I will keep everyone posted after our Utah trip.

    ..............

Not a big deal, and not quite relevant to the topic, but, at least in Europe, the manufacturers are required to add some errors to the speedometer to make it show a tad higher than the actual speed.

On some models, it was/is possible to remove this error by using advanced diagnostic software. (Probably when bikes are used for law enforcement)

My 850 reads +2mph at  all speeds up to 70mph compared to my satnav speed reading.

In the UK 30 limits I set the cruise to 32mph on the TFT and never set any speed warnings off.

I ordered a JT set to replace stock setup. Front sprocket is wrong. Bike tore down. Any leads on 16T availability besides JT?

I ordered a new c/s sprocket from Sprocket Center, same place the set came from. But got a different brand. For backup also ordered one from Bay. Both came yesterday, the one from Sprocket Center still doesn't fit, luckily the one off Bay fit. Should be able to try new gearing out this morning!
